Top 5 Travel Money Tips
We specialize in solo trips for women. As our guests get ready to travel with us, we get lots of questions about money. Here are a few tips to get you on the right track as you prep for your adventure.
5 Travel Money Tips
1) Some Cash: I carry some cash on me no matter where I am. I know that credit cards are accepted almost everywhere these days, but you cannot tip in many places with a credit card. In Spain, for example, you cannot write in the tip on your bill. Granted, tipping is different in Europe. But if I want to tip, I tip in cash. I also tip guides and others who help me on a trip, like a driver or a porter. Cash can come in handy. Bring at least $200 in the local currency with you.
2) ATMs: You can take local currency out of an ATM once you are in your destination. To do this, you need your debit card and you need to remember the PIN! Be aware of your surroundings and where you are using the ATM as well as the time of day.
3) Split Up: Do not put all your eggs in one basket. Split up your money and your credit cards. Carry some on you and then stash the rest in a separate bag. If your purse is stolen, you don't lose everything.
4) Conversion: If you are trying to figure out the local conversion, try XE.
5) AMEX: I wish more places accepted my AMEX card in Europe, but they do not. Make sure you have another card on you apart from your AMEX. (Higher-end shops and most larger hotels will take AMEX, so you can often use it a bit for larger purchases.)
